Your FOV should reflect the gunfights you spend most of your time taking. Someone holding longer lanes with an AR has different priorities from someone entering hills and clearing rooms with an SMG.
Lower FOV makes distant enemies appear larger on screen, while higher FOV shows more of your surroundings. That’s the basic tradeoff: how clearly you can see what’s ahead versus how much you can see around it. Call of Duty’s settings guide explains the same relationship.
If you mainly play AR
It makes sense to start toward the lower end of the range. You’ll often be watching a longer lane, holding a cross or trying to pick someone off a headglitch. In those situations, making a small target easier to read can be more useful than seeing a little farther toward the edges of your screen. If you’re constantly leaning forward to make out the person you’re shooting, your FOV may be wider than you need.
If you mainly play SMG
There’s more reason to try a wider view. When you’re moving through buildings, breaking a hill or fighting around a doorway, an opponent can move out of the centre of your screen quickly. Seeing more around the immediate fight can help you follow what’s happening, especially when there’s a second player nearby.
What the records show
The BO7 records give you some useful examples:
| Player | Recorded FOV |
|---|---|
| Dashy and Scrap | 98 |
| Huke | 99 |
| Shotzzy, HyDra and Simp | 100 |
| Sib | 107 |
Dashy and Scrap’s 98 is a useful reference for an AR setup that prioritises target visibility. But the other entries show how much overlap there is. Huke is at 99, and Shotzzy, HyDra and Simp are all at 100. Playing aggressively doesn’t mean you need to push the slider close to its limit. Sib’s 107 also shows that the lower end won’t suit everyone.
Across the 45 confirmed profiles, 18 players use exactly 100 FOV. That’s 40% of the sample. The average is 101.2, and 43 of the 45 values fall between 98 and 105. Most of the variation happens within a few points.
Where to start
Check the difference while aiming down sights as well. ADS FOV changes how your chosen view carries into aiming: Affected bases the ADS view on your FOV setting, while Independent uses a separate value. Keep that setting the same when comparing two FOVs, otherwise you’re changing more than one part of the picture. Call of Duty’s ADS FOV explanation.
How to judge the change
Use familiar fights. Watch the same lane with your AR, or clear the same room with your SMG. Keep your sensitivity steady and see whether you can identify and follow enemies more comfortably. Your role gives you a reason to test a particular range; your actual visibility should decide whether you stay there.
